What is a ‘Superfood’?

Superfoods are micronutrient-dense foods loaded with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, phytochemicals, and/or essential nutrients. In other words, they have a high amount of micronutrients per calorie such that they are great for our overall health. Some superfoods may be sources of nutrients that boost specific areas of health such as skin and hair, eyesight, immunity, and energy just to name a few. You will find many superfoods in our Café as well as in the recipes we share. Eating superfoods will not undo a ‘bad diet’ but they can help increase the consumption of key nutrients that affect health. Including superfoods in our daily diet is another potent way to Hit Health From Every Angle.

Protein:

Our plant protein products are organic, complete, vegan-friendly, delicious options.

Our animal protein products are always sourced from hormone-free, grass-fed or pasture-raised sources. Whey protein is one of the cleanest, most nutrient-dense, and easily absorbable protein sources available. Our collagen products are uniquely formulated with 5 types to provide your body with the building blocks it needs to support optimal health and exercise recovery. As a matter of fact, ALL our ingredients are sourced from gluten-free, soy-free, non-GMO verified sources that are free of artificial additives, sweeteners, dyes, fillers, or added sugars.

Some Superfoods you’ll find in the ExPo LIFE Superfood Café:

BANANA

Yes, bananas are high in carbs, but they are also high in fiber which is important for many reasons with one being that fiber helps you to absorb less of the carbohydrate. Bananas are a good source of potassium, an electrolyte lost during high sweat sessions, and important for blood pressure control and heart health. Because bananas release their energy slowly, they may help curb sweet cravings. Bananas are also a well-known digestion aid. They provide an excellent creamy texture to smoothies.

BEETROOT

Oh the glorious color! Rich in fiber, calcium, iron, vitamins A & C, folate, and manganese, it supports digestion and bowel health, metabolism, blood pressure control, and DNA maintenance. Beetroot may offer improved exercise performance due to its natural N.O. content which dilates blood vessels, enabling the delivery of oxygen to muscles as well as the removal of waste. It appears beets have a flavor that people either love or hate but the benefits cannot be ignored.

BERRIES

All berries are high in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Did you know strawberries have more vitamin C than oranges per equal measure?

CACAO

The more cacao is processed the more nutrients it loses. That’s why we use raw organic unroasted powder. A great way to satisfy your chocolate fix without overindulging in sugar.

CHIA

Part of the mint family, native to Central and South America, chia seeds are very high in omega 3 fatty acids. They also offer B vitamins, calcium, and magnesium. Plus, they are a great way to add protein, good fats, and fiber to your diet. As a matter of fact, they may enhance performance in endurance exercise lasting 90 minutes or more (Illian et al. 2011). The seeds can absorb up to 12 times their weight in water!

CUCUMBER

95% water, cukes also contain b vitamins, folate, C & K, calcium, iron, magnesium, and potassium, so they are excellent for keeping your body hydrated but with very few calories.

MACA

Maca, aka Peruvian ginseng, is a root that belongs in the radish family. It tastes great added to smoothies – its slightly sweet, malty flavor merges especially well with chocolate. It is said to be good for energy and balancing hormones.

MORINGA

Full of antioxidants, protein, vitamins, and minerals, the Moringa tree is native to the sub-Himalayan region and also commonly used in India and Africa. Sustainable and easy to grow, it is often used to fight malnutrition. Its nutty, slightly green flavor is delicious in green or fruit smoothies.

CACTUS (Napoli) WATER

SUGAR & FIBER

We never add sugar or unnatural sweeteners. Any sugar content is straight from the whole food, in which case it is accompanied by fiber to balance the natural sugar content. Exception: some of our protein powders list stevia in the ingredients.
